The environmental impacts of the sugar industry relate to the cultivation of sugar crops (cane and beet) and the progressing of the raw materials that they yield. The cultivation and processing are inter-related, cane mills tend to be sited close to the fields in which the crop is grown.
However, the raw sugar from the mill is often transported over intercontinental distances to be refined. This book discusses the cultivation and processing of these crops and examines the impacts of these processes, which includes soil erosion, loss of natural habits, excessive water consumption,
water and air pollution, and runoff and leaching of nutrients.
