Editorial Reviews
Book Description
Contributing to the debate over why premodern China failed to undergo an industrial revolution, this volume examines the subject of technological development, particularly agricultural development, to evaluate whether China suffered all-round technological stagnation. Using the example of the nongshu, or agricultural book, Deng also examines the role of Chinese values, social structure, class structure and bureaucracy in the accumulation and dissemination of knowledge. An organic part of Chinese agriculture and thus of Chinese economic history, the nongshu and the author's analysis of the nongshu phenomenon lead to new insights into the long-term economic development of premodern China.
