Book Description
Gumbo lilies is the true story of two young women (Timmie, Thelma Martin Anderson and Lee, Leona Schroader Neshiem), who in the late 1930's, set out to carve a place for themselves in the Gumbo Hills of South Dakota. Tho make payments on a "place of their own," they picked potatoes and corn in Iowa, herded sheep for neighboring ranchers, and broke horses, Timmie's true passion.

No fading violets thses two, if they wanted to get somewhere they hitchhiked. If they had a dream, they persued it, from attending art school in Chicago to jumping horses against Colorado millionaires.

One neighbor, upon meeting them at a stone well, wondered whether to offer them a drink or a chew.

Timmie and Lee's lifestyle puzzled some and tickled others. Regardless, they were bent on living their way and live it they did.
