William Herschel (1738-1822) was one of the most important and influential astronomers of the eighteenth century. This set comprises early, hitherto unpublished papers collected and edited under the direction of a joint committee of the Royal Society and the Royal Astronomical Society. A biographical introduction completes the set compiled mainly from unpublished material by John Louis Emil Dreyer (1852-1926), a Danish-born astronomer and author.
