Book Description
The long-awaited graduate text on a topic of broad interest in astrophysics
When dust and gases in space are strongly attracted by a powerful gravitational object, such as a black hole or neutron star, they spiral in and are gobbled up by the object. The intense frictional heating of these "accretion disks" sends out electromagnetic radiation, enabling scientists to detect them. These electromagnetic "signatures" have much to teach us about the physics of the accreting object.
