The Awesome Science Of Biology Series
Today, the science of biology is changing at a rate undreamed of only one or two decades ago. The theoretical laboratory research of a year ago suddenly becomes practical application. It has become difficult for scientists to keep up with the changes. The task of understanding the new knowledge is almost insurmountable for the non-scientist. Yet, there is a pressing necessity to understand.
The goal of the ASB SERIES is to explore the new knowledge with a scientifically qualified author who can translate the technical jargon of the research literature into terms understandable by those not specialized in the discipline. Our only sources of information are interviews with scientists themselves and peer-reviewed scientific literature. No information is based on the sensational stories often found in the popular press. The sources of information are properly cited in the text and a reference list with full details of publication is provided for those who might have interest in and access to it. Long technical terms are often a turn-off for people who would otherwise like to further their scientific knowledge. We do not oversimplify and attempt to eliminate such terms because we live in a technical world and new words are continually coined to describe new processes. We do attempt to explain these terms in a manner the average reader can understand. The ASB Series does not pretend to be an exhaustive survey of all the scientific literature about a particular topic. That is the proper domain of literature reviews published in scientific research journals or even in review books. We have, however, made every effort to review the most pertinent and, what we feel to be, the most important reports on a subject. Sometimes, these may not be the most recent. If, for example, a scientist made a major discovery and reported it in 1987, that work will be cited. While confirmation is recognized as being important, later "me too" reports by other scientists may not be mentioned. Where research results or interpretations differ and there is legitimate scientific disagreement, the ASB Series attempts to explain all viewpoints.
