Human Biology and Social Inequality (Society for the Study of Human Biology Symposium Series)
Editorial Reviews
Review
' ... this collection, written in a clear and accessible style, will be of interest to a broad constituency of professionals and policy makers.' Social Science and Medicine
'This book is a valuable introduction to the intersection between human biology and the social sciences ... I have seen no other volume that tackles this area in such a scholarly fashion, wielding evidence rather than simply passion ... I would heartily recommend this book to geneticists who take a broad view of their subject and wish to deepen their insight into the influence of social factors on the human phenotype.' Angus Clarke
'... very readable ... the excellent balance of theory and case-study material makes it very suitable for use in teaching at the graduate student level ... invaluable to students of the biology and sociology of human inequity and inequality, as well as those working in health policy.' Stanley J. Ulijasek, Journal of Biosocial Science
Book Description
Measures of biological variation have long been associated with many indices of social inequality. Data on health, nutrition, fertility, mortality, physical fitness, intellectual performance and a range of inherited biological markers show the ubiquity of such patterns across time, space and population. This volume reviews the current evidence for the strength of such linkages and the biological and social mechanisms that underlie them. A major theme is the relationship between the proximate determinants of these linkages and their longer term significance for biologically selective social mobility. This book addresses the question of how social stratification mediates processes of natural selection in human groups. Data like this pose difficult and sensitive issues for health policy, and recent developments in this area and in eugenics are reviewed for industrialized and developing countries.
